Queen Nandi, a woman of high esteem whose legacy extends far beyond her role as Shaka Zulu’s mother. While women have played significant roles in nation-building and warfare throughout Africa’s history, Zulu custom traditionally regarded women as inferior to men. Despite this, Nandi fearlessly challenged cultural norms by demanding 55 head of cattle as compensation for damages done
to her, a move that earned her respect and admiration. Known as Ndlorukazi, or the great elephant, Nandi was a fierce and powerful woman with a fiery temper.
Her strength and determination helped protect her sons from external attacks during their childhood and from enemies within the kingdom when Shaka assumed the throne. Today, Nandi’s remarkable legacy continues to inspire and captivate people
around the world.
